ABOUT

Renzo DeCarlo is a Peruvian-American clarinetist and collaborator based in Baltimore, Maryland. An accomplished instrumentalist and international performer, Renzo maintains a diverse 21st-century career in the arts including performing, teaching, arts administration, entrepreneurship, and more.

Renzo has performed with or holds substitute positions with the Tallahassee Symphony, Ocala Symphony, Orlando Philharmonic, and Space Coast Symphony Orchestras. Previously, he was also an active woodwind multi-instrumentalist in Central Florida. During his undergraduate studies at Florida State University, Renzo performed with the University Wind Ensemble, Wind Orchestra, New Music Ensemble, Philharmonia, and most notably, the University Symphony Orchestra where he was the first undergraduate in over two decades to serve as principal clarinet and played in their 2023 tour to the Dominican Republic. As part of Polymorphia, the new music ensemble at Florida State, Renzo performed on the Silenced Voices concert series, a set of concerts featuring music by composers oppressed by violent political regimes and Asian émigrés composers.

An avid collaborator, Renzo has coordinated multiple chamber music performances featuring a range of ensembles, performing classical masterworks and contemporary masterpieces. He is a founding member of the Cascades Trio, a dynamic ensemble consisting of clarinet, cello, and piano created in 2022. He has also collaborated with student and faculty composers at Florida State University to premiere multiple works, perform in a range of styles, and present multimedia performances.

Renzo is an innovative and dedicated arts administrator, maintaining the belief that a robust understanding of what happens on-stage is necessary to effectively manage it. During his time at Florida State University, he was a founding member and President of the Studio Orchestra at FSU, a student-operated incubator for future professionals in the music industry. Renzo was able to garner immense administrative and public support for the new organization and raise over $20,000 dollars of financial support, culminating in professional recording sessions and multi-media performances featuring music from film and video games for hundreds in the Tallahassee community. Renzo also served as an administrative intern with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra for their 2022-23 season, where he had the opportunity to present analytical reports to the Board of Directors.

Renzo currently studies with world-renowned soloist and chamber musician Alexander Fiterstein at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University; previous teachers include Jonathan Holden (West Michigan and Mobile Symphonies), Deborah Bish (Tallahassee Symphony and Florida State University), and Nikolay Blagov (Naples Philharmonic). He has also been featured in numerous masterclasses with Boris Allakhverdyan (LA Philharmonic), Franck Amet (CNDSM Lyon), Boris Berman (Yale), Steve Cohen (Northwestern University, ret.), Yehuda Gilad (Colburn School), Ron Samuels (Pittsburgh Symphony), François Sauzeau (Orchestre National de Lyon), and Eddy Vanoosthuyse (Brussels Philharmonic).
